VTX Makes the Cover – Elevator World March 2006
March 2006/Arlington, Va.: In the March issue of Elevator World, Vertical Transportation Excellence (VTX) was highlighted in the project spotlight, which made the cover. The article WMATA Escalator Modernization gives an overview of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) Metrorail system and the work VTX has done.
VTX is currently WMATA's elevator and escalator consultant for more than 800 pieces of vertical transportation equipment, including 588 escalators and 238 elevators in 86 stations. VTX has been involved with the 10-year capital-improvement program since its inception in 2000. VTX is working diligently to modernize and upgrade some of WMATA's oldest and most troublesome pieces of equipment to enhance the reliability and safety of the system.
The availability of WMATA's 588 escalators has improved significantly. This major rehabilitation project calls for overhauling 70% of its escalators by 2010, and is at its halfway mark. The investment in overhauling vertical transportation has led to gains in escalator availability, the elimination of the top-20 poor-performing escalators and a reduction in injuries. Escalator availability increased from 89% in the year 2000 to 93% today.
